” I think AI is a game-changer for embryologists ” – says Jennifer Ferrandiz Ward.

In this interview with Jennifer Ferrandiz Ward ( or as she is widely known on social media platforms “Jenny from the lab”),  we explore the inspiring path to embryology that she took —from studying biomedical science to creating educational content and even an IVF anthem! Through Jennifer Ferrandiz Ward’s story, we will discover how both scientific advances and personal connections have driven her to make a real impact in the world of reproductive medicine. Along the way, she shares her thoughts on the role of AI in embryology and her aspirations for the future, all while highlighting the importance of accessibility and community in this deeply personal field.

What inspired you to pursue a position in an IVF lab?

My path to becoming an embryologist has been quite the journey! I started off studying biomedical science in college, and honestly, I was just fascinated by a subject called Developmental Biology. I was amazed on how much science had evolved, and I just had to know more about the science of life and in particular assisted reproduction.

But what really pushed me towards the IVF lab was a personal experience. A close friend of mine went through fertility struggles, and seeing her journey opened my eyes to how much support and expertise is needed in this field. It made me realize that I wanted to be part of something that helps people achieve their dreams of parenthood.

Was there a particular aspect of reproductive science or a personal story that sparked your interest?

I have always had a strong desire to help others and knowing that my work could make a real difference in someone’s life is incredibly motivating. It’s amazing to think that the work we do can bring so much joy to so many families.

Speaking of helping others, you also create educational content. What inspired you to start making educational material?

Honestly, it all came from seeing how overwhelming and confusing the whole process can be for people. I had friends who went through IVF, and I noticed that there was a lot of misinformation out there. I wanted to change that! So, I thought that if I could break down the complex stuff into simple, it could really make a difference for those navigating this journey.

I think it’s super important to present this information in an accessible and understandable way because, let’s face it, IVF can be a lot to take in. When you’re dealing with emotions, medical terms, and all the decisions that come with it, the last thing you need is more confusion.

“By making the content easy to digest, I hope to empower people with the knowledge they need to make informed choices and feel more confident in their journey.”

Plus, when information is presented in a friendly and relatable manner, it helps to create a sense of community. People can feel less alone in their experiences, and that’s really important.

On a different note, you’ve also worked on something quite creative—the IVF song! How did that project come about, and what was the creative process like?

The IVF song really came to life in a pretty organic way. It all started when I was chatting to my brother and he showed me a super cool application that uses Artificial Intelligence to create songs. Soon it was going to be the International Day of Embryologists and I realized that there wasn’t a song for Embryologists, and I thought, “Why not create one?”.

The creative process was fun. I began by brainstorming ideas and writing a list of IVF words: Laboratory, science, embryologists, baby makers, microscopes, petri dish, hope, dream, parenthood, baby, etc. Once I had a solid list, I wrote the commands, and I submitted it to the AI application which came up with a few songs. Then I started modifying the lyrics to reflect what it is to be an Embryologist. I wanted the song to be relatable and uplifting, so I focused on telling a story that embryologists could connect with.

The final steps of the song involved refining the lyrics and music and getting feedback from friends. Overall, it was a journey filled with creativity and passion, and I am very proud of how it turned out. I hope embryologists feel that now they have an anthem to sing together.

I see you are quite familiar with using AI! How do you think AI could support you as an embryologist and aid in your decision-making process?

I think AI is a game-changer for embryologists. For starters, it could help analyze data from embryos much faster and more accurately than we can do manually. Also, AI could assist in predicting outcomes based on historical data. By analyzing past cases, it could help us identify patterns and suggest the best approaches for individual patients. This would not only streamline our decision-making process but also personalize treatment plans, which is very important in reproductive medicine.

Overall, I see AI as a supportive tool that can enhance our skills and improve the chances of success for our patients.

Would you be open to working with AI platforms? Or perhaps you’d be open but a bit cautious at first?

I would definitely be open to working with AI platforms as an embryologist. I think the potential benefits are very exciting, like improving efficiency and accuracy in our work. That said, I’d probably approach it with a bit of caution at first. It’s important to ensure that the technology is reliable and that we fully understand how it works before diving in completely.

I would want to make sure that while we’re leveraging AI to enhance our processes, we’re still keeping the human touch that’s so crucial in this field. After all, every embryo is unique, and our intuition and experience play a huge role in the decision-making process. I’m all for embracing new tech, but I’d want to take the time to learn and adapt to it carefully.

What would an AI platform have to offer you to be tempted to consider trying it?

As an embryologist, I would be tempted to try an AI platform if it could offer me a few key things. First, I would love to see some advanced data analysis capabilities.

Another thing that would really catch my interest is user-friendly interfaces. If the platform is easy to navigate and integrates smoothly, it would be much more likely that I give it a shot. Also, I’m not very good with tech so I need it to be easy!

Lastly, I would want to see some solid evidence of its effectiveness. If success stories or data show that the AI has improved outcomes in real-world scenarios, that would tempt me to give it a try.

Overall, if it can make my job easier and help my patients, I’m all in!

Looking ahead, what are your biggest goals and aspirations for the future?

As for my future goals, I am really passionate about continuing to learn and grow in this field. I would love to get involved in education and maybe even mentor others who are just starting out. Ultimately, I want to contribute to making reproductive science more accessible and effective for everyone.
